South West Bedfordshire MP, Andrew Selous, is calling on Central Bedfordshire Council to provide more transparency and accountability about progress on filling potholes.
Commenting, Andrew Selous MP said:
“Yesterday, residents asked me to come to Benning Avenue in Dunstable to look at a pothole which was reported to Central Bedfordshire Council last Easter and is now deep enough to cause damage to vehicles. Earlier this year, the Government gave the Council an additional £989,000 to fill potholes and the Council has also had a further payment of £702,000 and I understand that the Executive has also allocated more money from the budget to repair potholes, which is very welcome.
I think scrutiny, transparency and accountability of the work being done with this extra money is very important. I am sure the crews work very hard, but the public does have a right to know how many potholes are being filled each month and to have accurate information about where this has happened made publicly available on the Council website. It is not as easy as it should be to see this information and greater accountability should lead to better outcomes. This is particularly important as we are about to have another cold spell when the roads will deteriorate again.”
